How to stick to your new year resolutions

Find your groove: Betty Doyling says start small but stick to your exercise routine (Photograph by Nicola Muirhead)

It's mid-January and those ambitious new year resolutions might already be starting to feel like a distant memory. Don't worry, you're not alone! Many people find it challenging to maintain their fitness goals throughout the year.

There are many reasons

Same diet: if your eating habits haven't changed, it's highly unlikely you'll see significant fitness progress.

Lack of movement: finding time for exercise can be tough. Between work, family, and other commitments, it's easy to let workouts fall by the wayside.

Hydration hangover: dehydration can seriously impact energy levels and hinder workout performance.

Sleep deprivation: lack of sleep disrupts hormones that regulate hunger and metabolism, making it challenging to lose weight consistently and build muscle.

Don't give up!

It's OK if you haven't reached your fitness goals yet. The most important thing is to recognise where you are and start making small, sustainable changes.

Get your diet in check

Start small: aim for one or two simple dietary changes, such as adding more fruits and vegetables or cutting back on sugary drinks.

Focus on whole foods: incorporate lean protein, whole grains, and healthy fats into your meals.

Find your fitness groove

Start with short, enjoyable activities: a brisk walk, a fitness class, or a few rounds of yoga can make a big difference.

Stick to the schedule: treat your workouts like important appointments.

Consistently hydrate

Carry a water bottle: keep it with you throughout the day and sip on it regularly.

Infuse your water: add slices of fruit or herbs for flavour.

Prioritise sleep

Create a relaxing bedtime routine: pack away your electronics. Take a warm bath, read a book or listen to calming music.

Stick to a consistent sleep schedule: go to bed and wake up around the same time each day, even on weekends.

Remember

Consistency is key: small, consistent changes are more effective than drastic measures that are difficult to maintain.

Be patient: it takes time to build new habits. Don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate results.

Celebrate your progress: acknowledge and reward your progress, no matter how small.

Reaching your fitness goals is a journey, not a race. Focus on making sustainable lifestyle changes and enjoy the process.
