Understand the differences in the size of your fitness circle
As summer approaches, it's a natural time to evaluate your fitness journey. Maybe you're already enjoying the energy and camaraderie of your favourite group fitness class. This style of class is an awesome way to stay motivated and active.
Whether you enjoy working out in a crowd, working with a small group, or prefer a private personalised structure, understanding the differences is key.
Let's check out three common choices ― Large Group Training, Small Group Training, and Personal Training ― to help you figure out which one will get you ready to reach your summer goals.
1. Large Group Training
Big fitness classes like Zumba, spinning, or circuit training with lots of people (10-15+) offer a group party vibe. One instructor leads the whole crew.
High energy, loud music, lots of motivation from the crew!
Why You Might Enjoy It:
Motivating and fun atmosphere
Very budget-friendly
Class workout variety
Great for general fitness
Note: The instructor can't give everyone personal feedback, so the workout is more for general fitness.
2. Small Group Training
There is a team vibe with a handful of others (three to ten people) working out with a trainer. Often focused on things like building strength or more specific skills designed for small group goals.
You get more personal tips from the trainer than in a big classes, but still have that group support. Costs less than personal one-on-one training.
Why You Might Enjoy It:
A great balance: get personal attention and group motivation.
Builds a fun sense of accountability
More personal help with your form and technique.
More affordable than personal training.
Note: It's more focused than large group training, but still shares the trainer's time among the group.
3. Personal Training
Just you and your trainer, one-on-one. The workout is 100 per cent designed for your specific goals, needs, and fitness level.
You have complete private support designed just for you. It's the premium option, price-wise.
Why You Might Enjoy It:
Perfect if you have very specific goals (like training for an event, recovering from injury, or making big changes).
Maximum accountability to keep you on track.
Expert guidance on your form to keep you safe and effective.
Super flexible scheduling.
Note: It's the most expensive option and doesn't have that built-in group dynamic (however you'll likely build a great relationship with your trainer!)
Which one is for you? Large group training classes definitely improve general fitness and endurance and shave a lovely motivating structure.
Personal training and small group training can lead to more targeted strength gains, faster progress in specific areas, and if you have injuries, a more effective rehabilitation, or breaking through performance barriers that a generalised routine might not conquer.
And don’t forget you can also mix up your training. Pick a large group class and some personal sessions too!
Take time and evaluate your budget and personal fitness needs and see which level of personalisation works for you. Hope this helps you find your perfect workout style!
