Betty Doyling: The fitness lesson I learnt from a dog story

Stay motivated: Betty Doyling says your fitness routine is about consistency

I once heard a story about someone who agreed to care for a dog while the owner was away.

They stayed at the home for several weeks, walking and feeding the dog every day, rain or shine, out of commitment and care.

But there were no instructions, no clear guidance. When a minor issue came up after a grooming appointment, the owner unfairly blamed the caregiver.

In the end, the owner did pay the caregiver for their services but decided to deduct a “veterinarian fee” for something that was not the caregiver’s fault.

It was a small act of unfairness but it is a powerful reminder that not everyone will treat your effort with the same respect you give it.

It is a lesson that mirrors our fitness journey perfectly

You can show up to your workouts and put in the work and eat right but sometimes your results might seem to short change you.

Maybe the scale is stuck in the same spot, maybe someone else gets the credit when you have been putting in the work quietly. But just like that caregiver, your value does not decline because someone else fails to recognise it.

In fitness and in life you keep showing up because integrity is not about an instant reward — it is all about consistency. The effort counts, even when no one is watching. The results will follow, even if it is not in the way you expect.

So, whether it is caring for a dog or caring for your body, remember: do the right thing, keep your promises to yourself and do not let someone else’s poor judgment lessen your motivation.
