Taking it outside

Eggs over easy: Dellwood Middle School students woke up early to prepare breakfast for their fellow campers as part of their Paget Island camping experience.

In the last week of October, 2010, the M1s of Dellwood Middle School went on their annual week-long Paget Island camping trip thanks to numerous sponsors. The M1s have been camping on Paget Island for the past eight years. The purpose of this venture is to allow students to bond with each other, and for teachers to bond with students. It provides the opportunity for everyone to see each other in the natural light without the stress of being in the regular classroom setting. One of the major benefits of this experience is that students are taught how to appreciate the hardships of life that their parents and other adults have to go through to make sure that they are healthy and live in a clean environment. Many of these children learned how to cook, sweep, and make their beds for the first time.Below Shequilla Young shares a journal entry she made on the third evening of her adventure:Wednesday, October 27th, 2010, was the second day of the Paget Island camping trip. I woke up at 6.30am, got dressed, brushed my teeth, and headed towards the kitchen to eat breakfast. For breakfast, we had waffles, bacon, eggs, apple juice, and fruit. After breakfast we played kickball. We then had a town hall meeting before getting ready to go to St George’s for a tour.We got off the boat and went to Mitchell House, and then we walked a block to our next stop which was, Somers Garden. After Somers Garden we toured the Deliverance. It was scary. After touring the ship, we went back to Mitchell House to learn about the kitchen. Once learning about the artefacts in the kitchen was complete, we had a tour of St Peter’s Anglican Church, one of the oldest churches in the Wester hemisphere. Later on, we all met at Ordnance Island, so we could get on the boat and return to Paget Island after a tiring and exhausting trip. An hour of fun and relaxation awaited us on the island, so we were all excited. As soon as we got there, I picked up my fishing line, hook, and baits, and headed for the docks. At the dock, I put the hook on the line then I put on some bait. I was hoping to catch something, but I did not, so I pulled my line up. My friends and I decided to go swimming instead, but as we headed for the beach, unfortunately we were told that free time was over. We felt disappointed, but returned to the campsite with the others.Upon their return a special assembly was held with the assistance of the Minister of Education, Dame Jennifer Smith, to thank and award the various persons responsible for putting this memorable occasion together. Those awarded included several sponsors and teachers. Staff and students were also treated to a video of some of the students’ excursions.
