All eyes are on JASON XI as countdown to live broadcast begins

There are just two more weeks to go before JASON XI begins its live broadcast to students and teachers around the world.

And in the meantime the Bermuda Biological Station for Research (BBSR) is preparing for an exhibition of student projects based on this year's theme Going to Extremes .

Students from public, private and home schools were asked to create different types of artwork and stories based on the theme of adapting to life under the sea or in space.

BBSR Education officer Helle Patterson said that all but two or three schools are participating in the JASON Project and exhibits are flooding BBRS.

"We are looking for anything that catches the children's imagination,'' she said.

The exhibits will be judged by BBRS director Dr. Tony Knap and Cable and Wireless General Manager Eddie Saints. Prizes for the winners were donated by Gateway Systems, 3-Com and Texaco Foundations.

This year when the live broadcast begins there will be two Bermudian students there.

Kerri-Lynne Dietz and David Bean, both 14, were among the 30 students chosen from around the world to take part in this years research.

Kerri-Lynne, a Mount St. Agnes student, will be a NASA Johnson Station in Houston, Texas learning about the Space Station and what astronauts have to do to prepare for life in space.

David, a CedarBridge Academy student, will be at the Aquarius Underwater Laboratory in Key Largo, Florida taking part in dives to the laboratory.

Aquarius is the world's only underwater laboratory and is home to teams of scientist who study the Florida reefs on a regular basis.

JASON Project was founded by Dr. Robert Ballard after he discovered the wreckage of the RMS Titanic.

He was bombarded with requests form students wanting to study with him.

The exhibition of students work begins February 14 and will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the BBRS Education building next to the Horticultural Hall.

The live broadcast of JASON XI will begin February 28 and go until March 10.
