Already accomplished Whether he's singing in front of an orchestra or playing piano at home, Saltus student Thomas Foster is already a seasoned performer

Saltus Junior School student Thomas Foster was catapulted into the spot-light when he sang a solo performance for "Ahmal and The Night Visitors'' during the Bermuda Philharmonic Orchestra's Christmas concert last year.

At 11-years-old, Thomas is already an accomplished scholar and performer -- writing essays and playing piano.

In his third year at Saltus, Thomas has a full schedule with lessons, homework and tutors.

Although there is a drastic difference between singing to an audience and playing piano in a tutor's quiet home, Thomas said he wasn't intimidated.

"I didn't feel too, too nervous but I felt nervous.'' he whispered.

He lives in a "musical family'', through his parent's enthusiastic support and his god father, Andrew Lucas, an organist at St. Alban's Cathedral in England.

"It's a fairly musical family and I play piano. I will continue, hopefully all my life.'' said Thomas.

Eleven years old and Thomas is already looking forward to prep school in the UK. Some of his course work is actually designed to provide Thomas with a firm background for prep school.

He said: "I quite like French because the school I'm going to in the UK requires French.'' His strict social and academic calender includes homework on any variety of topics, from history to information computer technology, or ICD.

In ICD class, Thomas said: "Basically, we learn how to use a computer to do certain things.'' The class uses laptops to complement other courses, like English. Thomas said essays are strong part of school. "I like to write fiction. I like science fiction we don't often get the opportunity.'' When he's not plowing through homework or defeating his friends on the tennis court, Thomas said he likes to read.

He said he enjoys how the authors construct the storyline and environment.

"It's wonderful the way they create -- it's just the way they write the story. How he (the author) just does that -- comes up with creatures, worlds.'' Audiences continue to enjoy his pleasant singing and shy personality as Thomas matures as a performer.
