Getting to grips with a tough career

The future of the art world and professional wrestling may be hiding out at Harrington Sound Primary School.

For Head Boy Matthiew Richard and Head Girl Angela Dunstan, both ten, have already narrowed their future jobs down to just two or three choices.

"I want to be a professional artist or a cop,'' said Matthiew., And Angela said: "I want to be a dentist, a scientist or a wrestler -- but not really a wrestler.'' The two students said they did not even realise they were being considered for the positions of Head Boy and Girl at the school -- both were shocked to hear their names called during the important school assembly.

Angela said that she was expecting another girl to get the position and did not even realise her name had been called.

"I wasn't expecting it. My friend sitting beside me was like `that's you, that's you','' she said.

Matthiew said that he could not stop laughing even though it had nothing to do with being chosen as Head Boy.

"When I was called up I was talking to a friend sitting beside me. He said something funny and I was laughing,'' he said. "When I went up to the front I couldn't stop laughing.'' Both their families were very proud when they heard the news.

Matthiew said that when he found out the good news he had a bet going with his brother.

"I said to my brother `I'll beat him to tell mom'. When she came home and found out she was crazy and jumping all over the place,'' he said.

Matthiew is the third generation of Richards to make it to the heights of Head Boy or Girl. He said that his Grandfather was a Head Boy and his mother was a Head Girl.

Angela said that her mother was not exactly sure what had happened but was very happy she figured it out.

"When I came home my mom asked me why I was wearing two prefect badges. I told her `it's not a prefect badge it's a Head Girl badge'. She was so happy and we had a celebration.'' she said.

There were several things that these two liked best about being Head Boy and Girl but Matthiew said that getting picked for special things was his favourite.

He said: "We always get picked out to give out presents to teachers or merit awards to the students.'' Angela enjoys being a role model to other students the most.

"They're looking for people to look up to, to follow in their foot steps,'' she said. "They want be just like us when they get to P6 (Primary 6).'' When asked who they looked up to they decided on two history-making women and a basket ball star.

"Amilea Earhart is my hero because she was adventurous and she did things that men did to prove that women could do them too,'' Angela said. "Also I like Chyna (from WWF wrestling) because she beat the men up to get the intercontinental belt.'' " I like Michael Jordan because he had his own cologne and strong arm but when he retired I didn't like him any more. Now I like The Rock (from WWF wrestling), he's cool,'' said Mattiew.

But not everything is fun and games for Angela and Matthiew. Angela said: "If someone is picking on us we can't fight back.'' Matthiew added: "We can never get into fights, we always have to respect the teachers and we have to make sure to pay attention in class.'' For the most part their friends have been supportive of them but Matthiew explained that there were some problems.

"Some of them say `Oh goody goody boy' and stuff like that,'' he said. "Most people were happy but one girl was really really jealous.'' Over all both Matthiew and Angela are enjoying their roles at Harrington Sound. But Matthiew did have one more thing to say.

"Sometimes I wish I was the Head Girl because I have to give flowers to the teachers and guests that come to visit and sometimes they give me a hug and kiss me in front of the whole school.''
