The head boy and girl at any school plays an important role. They represent the school and help the teacher when ever needed and Marquel Waldron and Elenae Anderson from Somerset Primary School are no exception.

"The teachers look at us as helpers,'' said Elenae. "They call on us if they can't do something or they're too busy to do it themselves.

"We also try to explain to the students that if they are looking to get into trouble that we have to tell the teacher.'' But being the head boy and girl for these ten year-olds also means that you are expected to act appropriately all the time.

"It can be annoying to have people watching you all the time,'' Marquel said.

"If you do one thing wrong then they (the other students) end up following you and you get in trouble.'' Elenae added: "We can't not live up to other peoples' expectations. We're supposed to set an example for the other students.

"You're always being watched. You always have to do your best even when you don't expect it.'' But having their positions is certainly something to be proud of. They were selected from their entire senior class as being the most exemplary.

Elenae said that they had an excellent opportunity to help out and to set an example for other younger people.

"We try to accomplish something that everyone can be proud of,'' Marquel said.

As far as their friends are concerned they are still the same Marquel and Elenae they were before they became head boy and girl.

Elenae said: " My friends don't treat me as if I'm the head girl, but if I slip-up they get on me and remind me that I'm the head girl.'' Marquel added that his friends still look up to him even though he and Elenae are younger than the rest of their class.

With the middle-school years fast approaching, both students are wondering what it will be like. One with a little bit of fear and the other with excitement.

"I'm afraid that when I go to Middle School that all these older and taller people are going to look at and judge me,'' Elenae said.

But Marquel is excited to move on to a higher school, where he hopes he will become head boy again.

As far as role models in their own lives, teachers and family members are where they draw their inspiration.

Marquel said: "I look up to my teachers because of what they do to make the kids look up to them and they help us to be the best head boy and girl we can be.'' Elenae looked to her parents and aunt for her motivation.

"I would like to provide for everyone else the way my parents provide for me and my aunt because she's a doctor and that's what I want to be.'' she said.

Elenae has decided that she would like to be a surgical doctor when she get older, while Marquel has decided that professional football is the way for him to go.

Whatever their futures hold the world had better look out. This possible surgeon and footballer are ready to show you what they are made of.
