Mother really does know best
meal of the day? Well Gilbert Institute took that to heart when they recently held a Health for Success Breakfast.
With the help of three local companies the school was able to invite parents to have a balanced breakfast with their children before classes started.
"We prepared breakfast for 215 people,'' said Deputy Principal and Primary One teacher Elonda Stevens.
Everyone was able to enjoy cereal, fruit, juice and a muffin.
Gilbert's Parent Teacher Association worked with Butterfield & Vallis, Dunkley's Dairy and The Cake Shop to provide the breakfast.
Each person that participated in the breakfast donated $1.
Gilbert Institute raised $285, which will be donated to the Bermuda Heart Foundation.
The Health for Success programme began last year and is a co-ordinated effort between the Ministries of Education, Health, Social Services and 12 other government departments.
The programme's aim is to help encourage everyone to work together to promote healthy behaviours and lifestyles in order to strengthen teaching and learning.
The idea behind the programme is that healthy students are more likely to succeed.
Other events Gilbert has held so far include Fitness Friday, where students take part in some type of physical activity.
Students lunches are randomly checked and if they meet the requirements for a healthy lunch they win a prize or Grub Day.
Also the entire school took part in a Wellness Wednesday. Students signed up for various activities and spent the afternoon bike riding, rollerblading, walking etc.
Gilbert Institute was very pleased with the turn out of parents for its breakfast and have many more Health for Success events planned.
