Schools Math-a-thon finally emerged victorious yesterday.

Robinson, Tatem and Wilson House went up against each other as they fought it out for the coveted title of `Champions of the Math-a-thon'.

After a nail-biting finish Wilson House eventually won the day.

The teams were made up of the winners from the previous day's competitions at all three year levels.

The Math-a-thon week began on Monday when a representative from the Department of Education came to offer words of encouragement to the students.

And then the competition began.

Middle One students faced off on Tuesday, Middle Two students were pitted against each other on Wednesday and Middle Three students came head to head on Thursday.

Teams of students from all three year level battled as they tried to solve both word and number problems aimed at their grade level.

The idea behind the Math-a-thon was to build a sense of competition, team spirit and teach students how to be a team player while at the same time making maths fun.

Spice Valley is the only school on the Island to hold a competition of this kind and it hopes that other schools will follow their lead.

The House names were chosen from important figures in the community.

Tatem House was named for the first principal of Warwick Secondary, now Spice Valley Middle School, Dr. T.N. Tatem.

Robinson House was named for the first black Chief Officer Dr. Kenneth Robinson.

The winning Wilson House was named for community activist and former Senator Mr. Martin Wilson.

Wilson House has won the right to a Grub or Dress Down Day, along with certificates of achievement for the students that participated in the day.
