Women headline Saltus career day
women as the school celebrates a pair of anniversaries which established a prominent female presence in the formerly all-male institution.
The school is observing the tenth anniversary of co-education and the 25th anniversary of the Saltus Graduate Year, both of which inspired numbers of girls to enter the school, said Saltus director of development Daniel Blagg.
The afternoon career day session yesterday involved senior three students and their parents and will follow a programme which focuses on the students' choices for General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) majors in their fourth and fifth form years.
After a short talk by subject teachers, pupils will meet informally with female professionals from different career fields who will explain the educational preparation required for their trades, outline their job skills and report on their daily routines.
Event organiser and Saltus senior three head Nicole Chichon-DeSilva said: "Senior three students are at a crossroads in their education because they must select GCSE majors which suit them.
"Providing this kind of forum helps parents and pupils explore career options and plan the best educational preparation for the future.
"The school is very pleased that, this year, our professional guests will be able particularly to showcase opportunities for women in the work place -- and by nature of the positions they hold, prove to our girls that women are no longer confined to just a few traditional career choices.'' Professions represented by women this year will be: law -- AS&K's Vanessa Lovell; accounting -- Jacqui Van Beelen; human resources -- KPMG's Tana Tucker; Police -- Bermuda Police Service's Evelyn James Barnett; banking -- Bank of Bermuda's Debbie Lewis; counselling -- Betty Saunders; meteorology -- SERCO's Kim Stevenson; architecture -- Hamma Galleries' Jeanne Butterfield; reinsurance and insurance -- XL's Fiona Luck; risk insurance -- Sovereign Risk's Carolyn Thomas; advertising and graphic design -- Portfolio Group's Emma Mitchell; journalism -- Mid Ocean News' Jessie Moniz Hardy; tourism and hospitality -- Sandpiper Guest House's Lynne Rayner and Lynn Richardson; fitness and health -- Total Fitness' Ava Gruska; engineering -- Works and Engineering's Lee Sylvester; IT and electrical engineering -- SBI's Vicky Weth; and nursing -- King Edward VII Memorial Hospital's Lorraine Beasley.
