Pace setters: Saltus Grammar School head boy Eoin McMahon (left) and head girl Kalaina Johnson are role models and advocates for their fellow students.

Saltus Grammar School headgirl Kalaina Johnson and headboy Eoin McMahon show school pride by giving their best at school and in community activities. These two teens are said to have inspired many children at Saltus to become strong leaders. Kalaina and Eoin took time out of their busy schedules to talk to Young Observer about the people who have influenced them the most, their past experiences and their future.Eoin says that his parents are the most influential people in his life.He elaborated: “They have always pushed me to do my best in school. They’re the ones who got me up for school. They’re also the ones whom I developed my debating skills from.”Kalaina, who enjoys science, on the other hand said that the most influential people in her life include her science teachers Mrs Ester Keeley and Mr Steven Briggs. Kalaina also admires the heads of SGY Ms Nicole Chichon-DeSilva and Mr Jon Beard. Kalaina has enjoyed spending her senior years at the Saltus SGY programme.“SGY or Senior Graduate Year is a great way to prepare you for college,” Kalaina stated. “It gives you that sense of freedom that you don’t have in the younger years. Teachers see you as adults rather than a student.”According to the Saltus website, SGY also has a very flexible curriculum designed to meet the individual needs and interests of the student.Kalaina added: “They give the students a lot more freedom than the IB programme. You can take multiple classes in one subject not just one class in each subject.”Both Kalaina and Eoin have learned to balance a lot.Kalaina has so much on her plate from being ‘en pointe’ in ballet at Somerset School of Dance to helping out at the Women’s Resource Center. She is also a member of the student council, the orchestra where she plays the violin, and her biggest role: head-girl.Eoin has a lot on his plate as well, like student council and Youth Parliament. Eoin has won many awards as a debater. He is on the Saltus Debate team, The National and International Debate Team and holds his school’s leading role as head boy. The honour of being head-boy and head-girl comes with its rewards and responsibilities. They are rewarded with the opportunity to represent Saltus at lectures, memorial services and charitable events. Both Eoin and Kalaina agree that it’s also a great achievement to put on your college application. The responsibilities in being head prefects include helping to make decisions that affect the students. Some of the things that Kalaina and Eoin have done to improve student life at Saltus were to help choose the new colours of the classrooms and restrooms. They have also helped by putting juice back into the drink machine, which gives students a choice between water and juice. As the head prefects, Kalaina and Eoin assist with organising the prefects to make sure they monitor the hallways.College is definitely in both of these teens’ future. Kalaina plans to study at University of Western Ontario in Canada, where she would like to continue learning science, math, chemistry, pharmacy, forensics and business. Eoin plans to study at Southampton University in the United Kingdom where he plans to study economics and actuarial science. These two well-rounded students seem to have a successful future ahead of them.
