On February 8, 20 students from The Bermuda High School for Girls ventured to the Bermuda International Airport accompanied by three teachers. Their mission: to endure the cold and wind in New York City for four nights and to experience the Broadway shows and other arts that take place there.

During the creative arts trip, BHS students attended many shows. These included "In the Heights", starring Corbin Bleu, "A Little Night Music", starring Catherine Zeta Jones, and "The Blue Man Group". The most unique show was The Blue Man Group, as no speaking takes place, although there is a lot of audience participation. However some of the girls were extremely excited about seeing Corbin Bleu on the first night of their stay.

As it was a school-organised trip the students attended several workshops where they learned about different aspects of drama, including make-up and costume creation. During the drama workshop students had an opportunity to contemplate the use of cameras to create effects such as secrecy or the need of an honest, although exaggerated, character during work in theater. During the makeup workshop students were taught that the use of less makeup is more effective than the use of too much and some lucky (or unlucky) students got the chance to have their face painted by the makeup artist leading the workshop.

However the creative arts trip did not only consist of drama related activities. The students also had an opportunity to view the Tim Burton exhibit in the Museum of Modern art (MoMA). Music students on the trip were asked to select a piece of art from Tim Burton's exhibit that inspired them and to compose a piece of music based on it. The BHS students also were invited on a tour of Julliard, one of the most prestigious music and dance schools in the world. This was especially fulfilling for the aspiring musicians and dancers in the group.

While in New York they stayed at the Wellington Hotel, that is located on 7th Avenue and 56th Street. There the students were subjected to many catastrophes. The most memorable one was the fire that filled the hotel hallways with smoke on the third night of their stay. Luckily no one was injured and the situation was quickly resolved.

"I was in my pajamas when I heard the fire alarm," one student commented. "At first I passed it off as a siren outside but soon my roommate came running into the room yelling that the hallway was full of smoke."

As always in New York, some shopping was done, although this was not the main purpose of the trip, and so not as much time was spent shopping as some girls would have liked.

Also the group visited many restaurants during their adventure in the Big Apple; the most loved being Ellen's Stardust Dinner where the wait staff are constantly singing and dancing around the tables as you eat.

As many people may recall, a blizzard surged through New York that week, and the creative arts trip was caught in it. The snow was very exciting for many of the girls as they had never seen snow before, having lived all of their lives in a warm climate. Luckily, the weather did not disturb the activities on the trip, no flights were cancelled and all of the BHS students arrived safely home on time despite the windy weather in Bermuda and snow in New York.
