End of term fun featured kites, scavenger hunt and quiz
The last day of second term was a special day for the MYP students at Somersfield Academy this year. Instead of regular classes, everyone got to take part in several activities throughout the day. The first event was a school wide scavenger hunt.
All the answers were posted on the walls of the school building in the form of interesting facts, and the students had to find them by reading questions on a clue sheet. Every student in MYP was racing around the school at top speed, trying to get to the answers first so that they could deliver their completed clue sheet to Mrs. Dodd.
It was a lot of fun because the questions were very challenging and creative, and the students often had to figure out a riddle in order to get to the answer.
After the scavenger hunt, the students went to assigned classes with their team mates to gather kite making materials. They then went up to the library to take part in a general knowledge quiz that had riddles at the end. The quiz was completed in teams, and even though it was a bit mind boggling, it was a lot of fun as well.
Next, it was back down to the assigned classes to begin making the Bermuda kites in teams of two to four people. For some students, it was their first time making a Bermuda kite from scratch, so it was interesting for them to see how difficult a project it was. Everyone had the chance to be creative with their design and we learned to work as part of a team to get the job done.
After the kite making, the teams went to different classes to complete a challenge. Some of the challenges were testing our skills, such as the basketball task. Other challenges were hands-on activities that required the students to think creatively such as the origami frog that had to hop!
Then it was out to the field to fly the homemade Bermuda kites. The judges, Ms Caldwell, Mrs. Young and Mrs. O'Connor, were looking for the most Bermudian kite, the highest flying kite and the prettiest kite.
The day finished with a big, enthusiastic countdown to the end of the term.
Even though we didn't do 'regular' work, everyone learned some new facts and skills and how to work and have fun together. It was a great finish to a busy term, and the students would like to thank the teachers who organised such a great Fun Day.
