THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST

Unique event: Minister of Education Randolph Horton with Jasmin Brunson, Mikkail Crockwell, Nyisha Saunders and Darrin Lewis.

Three senior school students and an Educational Officer are representing Bermuda at the United States Scholar-Athlete Games in Rhode Island this week.

Sponsored by the Institute for International Sport and the Ministry of Education, recipients of the 23rd Denton Hurdle Memorial Award, Nyisha Saunders and Mikkail Crockwell from The Berkeley Institute, along with runner up Jasmin Brunson from the Bermuda High School for Girls and Acting Education Officer for Physical Education and Health Darrin Lewis are attending the 2008 games, which started last Saturday and run until this Saturday.

Hailed by past participants, sponsors and the news media as "one of the finest youth sports/cultural events in the world", the 2008 United States Scholar-Athlete Games will feature an extraordinary assembly of the best and brightest high school athletes, artists and scholars. The week-long event is held on the campus of the University of Rhode Island.

The US Scholar-Athlete Games are unique in that they combine athletic, cultural and educational activities at one site and at one time.

This event is aimed to helping the young participants, ages 15 to 19, learn about the principles of good sportsmanship and ethics, develop leadership skills and gain greater understanding and respect for multiple cultures and people. For many past participants, the Games have been a truly life-changing experience.

In addition, Minister of Education Randolph Horton has invited the Bermuda representatives to attend his induction into the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame and is scheduled to address the 1,000 scholar-athletes and scholar-artists.
