Dance concert will be a first
Do you love watching youth demonstrate their talents? Do you want to see them do something more productive with their time than watch TV and play video games? Or maybe you just want to see a good show? The Berkeley Institute will be holding their first ever dance concert on Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26.The organisers are encouraging the public to come out and watch the students express themselves through the art of dance. They have actively contributed to the development of Bermuda’s community by sharing and teaching younger students at Elliot Primary After School Programme, performing at Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute, Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy, Westmeath Rest home, and in churches and various community events around the Island. The students have been working continuously during lunch times, after school, and during vacations to ensure that this will be the best show yet. The dances will use a variety of styles from ballet to modern, tap, jazz, hip-hop, dance fusion, dance hall and much, much more. The dances are performed and choreographed by the students themselves!“Dancing is my favourite thing to do,” declared Sierra Spencer, “so when Ms Manders asked me to dance, I was more than willing to help. I’m pretty comfortable performing. I have been doing it for a while.“I come every Tuesday and Thursday after school to practice for about an hour or two,” Sierra continued, “so I put in a lot of hard work. I love all of the dances, but my favourite is I believe, being that I choreographed it. I can’t wait for opening night; I have so many people to thank for supporting me. I can’t wait to finally show my supporters that all their help has really paid off!”“I think this concert will go great, the students have put a lot of time into their dance,” Ms Nikia Mander, Head of Dance, stated.“I have no doubt that the performance will be extraordinary,” she concluded. The Dance Department is aiming to raise funds to contribute towards the future of the Dance programme, costumes for students, documentation, advertising, and The Berkeley Institute students attending The National High School Dance festival in 2012.The Dance concert will be held on Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26 in The Berkeley Institute Cafetorium at 7pm. General tickets will be on sale for $15, Patron tickets for $30 and donor contributions will start at $100.
