Reaping a bumper harvest from school’s onion patch
We have a square-foot garden at Clearwater Middle School. We grow and take care of prize-winning onions, thyme and other plants in our garden.Onions belong to the lily family because they have bulbs like the Easter lilies. They grow to a height of about 12 inches. There are different kinds of onions small ones and big ones and there are yellow, red and white onions.We entered baby onions in the Annual Exhibition. Our onions took a long time to grow and weren’t as big as we hoped when we entered them. We were happy to win third prize for them though. Taking care of them isn’t a lot of work. We’ll keep tending them until they get bigger and their tops fall over, which is a sign for us to pick them.We had a lot of fun planting the seedlings and putting water on the plants. We won third prize for our onions and thyme in the Annual Agricultural Exhibition. We like to take care of the plants so we grow fresh vegetables save money and have good health. Grow onions, save money and eat them to stay healthy.l Interesting facts about onionsBermuda is famous for its export of onions in the late 1800s and 1900s. Our first onion seeds came from the Canary Islands. Bermuda was nicknamed “the Onion Patch” and Bermudians also were nicknamed “Onions”.Onions have a lot of sugar which increases their calories. However, onions are a good source of dietary fibre, vitamins B 6, foliate, potassium, manganese, and a very good source of vitamin C.How do you plant onions?1. You should plant onions in Bermuda between October and November.2. First, we prepare the soil.3. You have to use a pencil and push it in to the soil like about two inches deep.4. Then, make four holes to one square foot. The book says to plant 16 onion seedlings in one square foot but we thought it was too much so we planted 12 instead.5 Next, water the holes.6. Put the onions in the holes and pack down the soil firmly.7. Water once more.8. Finally, be sure to water the onions every day unless it rains a lot and fertilise the onions about every two weeks. We use a “tea” which we make by mixing water and chicken manure.
