Learning that teamwork counts on the ocean waves

On April 11, 21 Warwick Academy girls left Dockyard and boarded the wonderful, well-known Spirit of Bermuda to embark on a five-day journey. We were then split into three watch groups: Main watch lead by Mr DeSilva, Mizzen watch lead by Ms Dixon and Fore watch lead by Mr Scotton, each of which were named after the three sails on the boat.On the first day we were taught how to dress and undress a winch, put up a sail and take one down as well. They were really heavy, so it took a lot of teamwork to get the job done; in the end when we accomplished it, we felt really proud. We had an outstanding chef called Cheffy and great crew members plus a good captain, Captain Jack.On our trip we learned how important teamwork is in general; you couldn’t get the job done without your team. The trip also boosted everyone’s confidence because you did so many things you never thought you could have done and you probably couldn’t have done without your watch group. Also we learnt about the boat bow, starboard, port, stern and the sails, winches, how to steer at the helm and about our main topic, which was migrations.Following our topic on migrations we took a trip to Nonsuch Island where we had a guided tour and learnt about the endemic plants and animals. We saw many longtails, otherwise known as the white tail tropic bird, we even saw Bermuda’s national bird the cahow. We saw Mr Madeiros weigh and measure the baby chick, and some got to touch the chick and it felt like air. They were like a mini dust ball. We also got the opportunity to go snorkelling along the Bermuda boiler reef. Many of our group didn’t go very far because of the unbelievable amount of jellyfish at this time of the year, but the two of us as well as two other students and crew members decided to go further out. It was truly amazing to see the beautiful coral and the different types of fish that live there; we are amazed at what we saw and are proud we got over our own fears of getting stung. We had so much fun, and we recommend this experience to everyone who gets the opportunity. Our main piece of advice would be to keep your stuff tidy in your locker because one of the funniest parts of the trip was being entertained by your friends who had to do something either crazy or hilarious to get their stuff back. These had gone into a special “auction bag”. The worse part of the trip was leaving because we had the best time and we got to see different sides of people and hang out with people you didn’t know before. Furthermore we learned so much and left having so much more confidence then we started out with. This has been an experience of a lifetime.
