Promoting paradise: Harrington Sound Primary School students conducted research to establish the attractions most appealing to Bermuda’s tourists and presented their findings in variety of ways.

Harrington Sound Primary students, under the direction of teacher Primary 4 Firkte Ming, launched their own tourism campaign, which included posters and television promotions. The Primary 4 project involving 19 students was about tourism in Bermuda. We were learning about tourism in our Social Studies class. We had to design a poster advertising Bermuda; then we had to create a brochure of Bermuda. Next we had to make up a five-minute commercial that promoted or persuaded tourists to come to Bermuda. We also had to interview some tourists and find out their opinions about their stay in Bermuda.Once we did that we made a graph of our results. We also visited the Fairmont Hamilton Princess hotel and learned that Bermuda has only one Bermudian chef working there and were surprised. Some of us now may want to become chefs after that tour of the hotel. The project took two weeks in total during the week March 14-25 with the visit to the hotel being later in April,Each student interviewed at least one tourist; some interviewed three. The tourists were interviewed at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess hotel, the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, the Grotto Bay Hotel, at a beach, Warwick Long Bay, and in the square at St George.Brochures included pictures and information about places in Bermuda that the tourists can or should visit. Some commercials were for radio, and some, because they were on CD, were for television. Parents videotaped the students talking and visiting different spots on the Island. The posters are now displayed in the classroom. After doing the surveys on the tourists’ likes, we have learned that most tourists like our friendly people, beaches and weather the best.We feel that we can give our information on tourists to the Tourism Department, and it may help the tourists to enjoy Bermuda more, especially the entertainment area.
