How we made $300 as entrepreneurs
In April our teacher decided to make our learning come alive. In a unit about economics and business, we had to create a business for our social studies project. First, we picked names out of a bag to see who our partners would be. Once in pairs, we decided what we were going to make and the names of our companies. The names of the companies were: Double C and Triple X (Calais and Xavier), Ravenn and Chez’s Company (Ravenn and Chez), Shani’s Company (Shani and Jerriko), and On Your Neck, Co. (Alys and Riniko). Then she gave us an imaginary budget of $200 which was to be used to buy materials for the products that we would make and sell. We had to make some tough choices about what we could afford or not afford. The partners then had a business meeting with each other and wrote out their plans on paper. Next, we bought our materials and created our products. We made bookmarks, necklaces and bracelets from beads, string, popsicle sticks, felt and pipe cleaners. Then we took pictures of the products and made posters to hang around the school as a form of advertisement. We also made commercials and sent them to all the classes to see.On May 6 we were excited to finally be able to sell our stuff. The kids from the other classes packed the assembly hall waiting to buy our merchandise. We were responsible for making sure that we gave out the correct change and managed our table. We sold out of everything in record time! Unfortunately, some kids left disappointed. When we were finished we counted all the money and we made $300! We sent it to Japan to help them out because they got hit by an earthquake and tsunami.
