Memorable moment collecting Young Citizen Award
In November I received the Young Citizen Award. Everyone in my class was given a paper and we had to vote for the person that we thought was a good citizen. This vote was to determine who we thought should get the Young Citizen Award. I voted for my friend Ravenn because I thought she was kind and always eager to help someone. Our teacher, Ms Raat read out the votes. “Two votes Ravenn, two votes Shani,” she read. The anxiety was breathtaking. There were only ten people who voted by the way. Then Ms Raat said smiling, “With six votes, the young citizen is … Calais!”I was so excited, but of course I couldn’t scream because I was still in school.Ms Raat sent me out of the room. She said so they could “talk” about me with a grin on her face. I didn’t believe her though. When she called me back I had no idea what they had discussed. When the day finally came, I was scared out of my shorts. I remember walking into a humongous hotel with my mom and dad. We walked up a long staircase. Then we reached a big room that looked like a dining room, and it was.I saw men dressed in white taking out chairs and tables. Kids from all different schools were there with their parents. Smiles and laughter filled the room; I was shocked it didn’t burst from the excitement in the air.We sat down at a table where Mrs Beckles (my principal) sat waiting. The CedarBridge band played some music, which made everyone even more excited. They were really good! Then they called out the names of the Young Citizens. When they called my name, I jumped up and slowly walked up to the stage with my mom. The Minister, Mr Blakeney, shook my hand then gave me a glass award that read; Young Citizen Award. I also got a certificate, it had Young Citizen Award presented to Calais Darrell from East End Primary School engraved on it. Next, my mom took my picture and we walked back to our table. When I got to my table, my dad gave me a big hug and told me congratulations and that he was proud of me. My whole body filled up with joy and happiness. Mrs Beckles smiled at me. After all the names were called we ate brunch. They had chicken nuggets, salad, rice, macaroni, mini sandwiches and so much more good-smelling food.At the end of the ceremony all the children who received the award came up and got their picture taken together. Finally the glorious day was over.
