Kyla Sinclair, President, and Leanne Moniz, Vice President, are two Student Council leaders who are interested in bettering the lives of students at Mount Saint Agnes. Both students strive to have an impact on the world around them, by setting an example of doing the right thing and making a difference. In order to become Student Council leaders, the students had to go through a series of steps, such as filling out applications, becoming eligible to run, and campaigning to receive as many votes as possible. The students were thrilled when they were elected to the positions of President and Vice President.“Some characteristics needed to become a Student Council leader are being outgoing, confident, energetic, and definitely sociable,” Leanne stated. “You also have to be willing to help in any situation and have to maintain passing grades.”From attending MSA since kindergarten the students knew that before they graduated they wanted to influence their school significantly. “We have many ideas; right now we’re raising money for Salvation Army just to give back to the community,” stated Kyla. “We also participate in a lot of volunteer work outside of school.” The students came up with a project to raise money for Salvation Army, by giving 30 members of the Student Council a pledge sheet to raise at least $150 per person. The students pledged to sleep in Victoria Park for one night to spread the awareness of homeless people. The students felt that this was a fun, creative, and an advantageous way of spreading the awareness of homeless people. It was guaranteed to catch the public’s attention as well.Goals that Kyla and Leanne are planning for the school year include hearing the voices of all the students’ opinions and concerns. They also want to create fundraisers for the school such as car washes, dances and even cruises. Their main focus is to get involved and become more interactive in Bermuda’s society.“We also want to be role models for everyone,” stated Leanne. While both individuals talk about their plans for the school year, they also are focusing on their future plans, which include working with autistic children [Leanne] and studying Biology [Kyla]. Both individuals’ favourite subjects are sciences: Leanne enjoys Chemistry, while Kayla looks forward to Biology lessons.Even though both students are outgoing, they still find the time to get good grades and focus on their career choices. While bettering the lives of others both individuals continue their paths to success and the journey life brings them.
