Warwick’s tag rugby team wins Primary Tag Tournament
Warwick Academy took part in the Bermuda School Sports Federations Primary Tag Rugby Tournament. The tournament was on Thursday January 26 and was a very busy day for the organisers as it had over 300 students competing.Starting at 10.30am, the Warwick Academy boy’s primary A-Team had only five minutes until our ten minute game against St David’s. After this game, we had to think about the games to come. After a short interval, we moved on to our next game against West End Primary. As soon as this game ended we were all screaming with excitement as this was our first win in the tournament. We were proud, and so was our coach, Stanton Lewis. At this point we were on to our third game, against Paget Primary. This was a difficult match as both as our tries were scored in the last five minutes of the match. This meant we had won again and made it into the quarter finals. The quarter finals were against Somersfield Academy. The game was once again challenging as most of the Somersfield team were speedy and could run through our defence with ease. But this never happened because our defence always kept in a line to defend the try line. This quarter final game was easy as we scored four times and the opposing team only scored once. Now we were into the semis. The semifinals were against one of the best teams in the league, Saltus. These was an extremely nail biting game as we only won by one try.At the end of this match we all did a celebration and screamed with happiness as we had made it into the finals. Finally we had the big match against our rivals who we drew with before, St David’s.As this was the final, we were all really excited. Halfway through the game, when it was one to one, St David’s scored a very impressive try to take the lead. The whole of the Warwick Academy team knew with only two minutes to go that we had to score a try. This is what we achieved with only one minute until the end of the match. We had won the tournament! All of the boys representing Warwick Academy ran around the field with our arms out in a windmill shape cheering our heads off.At the end of the event, the prize giving was held, and as our team collected our medals, the crowd cheered very sportingly. Our coach, Mr Lewis, came over after the prize giving and said that he was extremely proud of our performance and that we had won for the third time in a row.Our school is very proud with this year’s participants for the Primary Tag Rugby Tournament. We also thought that the event was better supported than last year.So Warwick Academy won the tag rugby tournament and it also adds to our excitement as it is our 350th anniversary this year!
