Banking on feeding the hungry
The 1st Company Bermuda Boys Brigade recently donated over $300 worth of food to St John's Anglican Church Food Bank. The senior members of the Boys Brigade, Joshua Stephens, Dylan Moulder, Matthew Limes, Connor Limes and Ryan Cranfield, together with parents and leaders, helped to prepare and serve a Pancake Supper at St Paul's Church Hall in Paget in February this year.Dry and canned goods were purchased with the funds raised, and recently the boys handed cases of spaghetti, pasta sauce, Cheerios and other foodstuffs to the Food Bank at St John’s Anglican Church. The donations were accepted by Youth and Children’s Minister at St John's Church, Wayne P Hackman, who talked with the boys about the work of this charitable project.Boys Brigade member Dylan Moulder explained, “Food banks are important organisations as they provide food to those who cannot afford to pay for it and prevent starvation in the community.”Reflecting on the boys efforts, he stated, “I felt very good about helping out, as you know in your mind, as you are stacking the food up to be taken away, that because of this food people will no longer starve and will be able to have a meal just like you can.”The Boys Brigade was started over 125 years ago and is a Christian Organisation, but Dylan pointed out, “Even if you aren't a Christian you can still join. The Boys Brigade does not push anyone away, and as our motto states ‘Sure and Steadfast’, we will not alienate anyone.“It is an absolute pleasure to be involved in such an organisation where so many good things come forth,” Dylan continued. “I started about four years ago, and I've been involved ever since. It is an organisation that I recommend anyone to join. You can learn so many things about life, and it's absolutely fun.”The boys work towards earning badges, and in the process and learn about maintenance such as plumbing and electricity as well as acquiring many other skills.“You wouldn't believe how many new people you can meet and develop friendships,” Dylan declared. “I've seen people with hard upbringings attend and leave with a positive character and good thoughts about life. The Boy's Brigade is an amazing organisation.”Useful website: www.bermudaboysbrigade.free.bm
