Saltus’ Sassy Saxes swing in Copenhagen
Four Saltus Grammar School S10s known as the Sassy Saxes, recently returned from a seven-day educational and performance trip to Denmark. After several busy weeks in November and December packed with performances, fundraisers and the completion of the school term, the Sassy Saxes were off on December 13th to Copenhagen. After an exhausting 15-hour trip, the quartet, still in their pjs, finally arrived at their destination. After a quick change at the airport and donning the appropriate cold weather attire, the girls were en route to their first performance at the Danish Ministry of Finance. The performance went off without a hitch. The next performance took place a few days later at Sank Joseph School where, after trudging through the snow with instruments in tow, the Sassy Saxes arrived, along with the students on their bicycles, in the darkness at 8am.They then ventured by train and bus to Sankt Annae Gymnasium, a well-known music high school. After a warm up and brief practice, the Sassy Saxes gave an energising performance in the school’s famous concert hall.Later that evening the quartet performed in front of a private member group at the Gentofte Library, a library also regarded as a popular cultural centre in Copenhagen. The final performance, which was attended by more than 300 students and teachers, was held at Rygaards International School in Hellerup. The group played in front of a very enthusiastic audience, giving their best performance so far.At the end, the buzzing crowd demanded an encore and the Sassy Saxes closed the show to thunderous applause with the entertaining Christmas tune, ‘Santa Baby’.The Sassy Saxes were well received at every venue, where the audiences ranged in age from preschoolers to senior citizens. For their audiences it was truly a learning experience about Bermuda and everyone appreciated the souvenirs that were donated by the Bermuda Dept of Tourism.Throughout their trip, the girls embraced the opportunity to learn about European culture, from the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet at Kronborg Castle, cycling to Hans Christian Anderson’s Little Mermaid, to seeing Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet in the famed Tivoli Gardens. The group was also afforded the opportunity to broaden their musical horizons by experiencing the Danish Radio Big Band in concert and through learning about the Erasmus Programme for international study at the Danish Music Conservatory. The Sassy Saxes would like to give their sincere thanks to everyone who helped make the trip possible. The Sassy Saxes are available for small gatherings and larger events.
