Book Week at Warwick Academy

Literature comes to life and takes over the Primary Department of Warwick Academy during the week of November 11. This year, Book Week will celebrate the most lovely and heartwarming book:‘The Flower Man’ by Mark Lundy.

In this wonderful, wordless picture book there are over 60 stories to be found, as every window of the houses on the pages tells a different story. As the story unfolds we discover what happens when a colourless town is visited by an unassuming old man. A house is purchased, fixed up and everything he touches turns to colour; moreover, when a flower is given to a little girl everything changes. Every life is impacted and transformed through the actions of one person.

At every turn of the page, we see the colour start to infuse the images. Very cleverly we go from a black and white story book to pages full of vibrant colour.

To make the story come to life, our students will start the week in grub clothing, wearing just black and white. Then as the week progresses, the children will add colour to their uniform by adding coloured socks and caps and ending in a rainbow day on Friday.

More importantly, each year group will do as the Flower Man did and do something nice for each other, the school and to make Bermuda a little bit nicer.

You can look out for Mrs Jabour’s Year 3 class at Warwick Lindo’s tomorrow where they will be handing out handmade foam flowers with a good wish message attached to them.

Who says that one person cannot make a difference? The Flower Man did and we at Warwick Academy are going to do so as well.

‘The Flower Man’ is available at The Bermuda Book Store.
