Career Day at Purvis Primary
PURVIS PRIMARY CAREER DAY
By Mrs Shannalee Aberdeen
Purvis Primary School had a career fair the morning of Friday, November 8. Various community workers were invited to Purvis to speak about how mathematics, literacy, speaking and listening are used within their careers. Students at a young age need to recognise that what they are learning at school is meaningful and valuable since they will most likely be required to use those skills in the world of work (no matter which career path they choose). In addition, the students learned about the relationship between the ‘world of work’ ethics and school ethics (coming to work on time, being respectful to colleagues, working as a team, being responsible, communication, etc).
Each community worker was stationed in a classroom. Each class rotated to each community worker via intervals of 15 to 20 minutes. The students were fully engaged and had a valuable learning experience.
The community workers who came to visit Purvis Primary were the following:
Dr Germaine Binns: Podiatrist of Foot and Ankle Clinic.
Dr Medieros: Veterinarian of Ettrick Animal Hospital.
Carla: Ultimate Imaging technician.
Jamika Talbot and team from American Airlines.
Mrs Furbert and team of Health Department-Dental Nurses.
Nicola Woods, Hairdresser.
King Edward VII Memorial Hospital EMT Ambulance workers.
Bermuda Police Service Community Action Team (CAT).
Farmer: Mr and Mrs Swan of Roots Development Landscaping and Farming.
Bermuda Postal Service.
Nadunja Bailey: local comedian.
Jamel Ming of Mambo Salsa Dance School/
