What peace means to these students
More than 220 students took part in Literacy Day focusing on the theme of peace at Harrington Sound Primary last week.
Ms Lisa Smith, the school principal, selected the topic after reading an article in The Royal Gazette about education. Each student of the school was asked to produce a poem, writing or artwork for homework. Red was worn to highlight Read Every Day and all activities centered round peace in the community.
Janel Allen and Caroline Conway are the literacy team leaders who are responsible for initiating literacy throughout Harrington Sound Primary.
“We use and work closely with Oxford University Press to instill the Cambridge curriculum. Harrington Sound will be the first school to introduce Premier Reading Stars, a new reading series to encourage boys to read based on Premier League football,” Ms Conway said
Here are some of the poems and photographs from the students at Harrington Sound Primary on Literacy Day.
What is Peace?
Peace is what you should make each day
Peace is about living the right way
Peace is about kindness and caring
Peace is about sharing and volunteering
Peace is an amazing feeling
Peace is loving and forgiving
Peace is more precious than a pearl
Peace is what I want in my world
By Amias Lightbourne, age 9
Peaceful
The school is quiet all the children have left….PEACE!
The shops are closed al the shoppers have left…PEACE!
The streets are empty all the traffic has gone….PEACE!
The living room is calm all the kids are in bed….PEACE!
The wind has dropped all the snow has fallen…PEACE!
The guns on the street are silent….PEACE!
The world is just waiting for Christmas….PEACE!

My Peace Poem
We raised a lot of money and that is very neat
But what we really need is a little bit of peace
Just do a little something –let someone have your seat
Or maybe even help someone to walk across the street!
So please stop all the arguing and awful fuss and fighting
We’re messing up the island more than Hurricane Emily
My parents told me all about that horrid storm
And what they want is for everyone to act like one big family’

What Peace Means to Me
Peace is the way to solve the island’s problems
We don’t need the violence any more
We will spread the message even though we are only small
I want people to be able to go out without a fear
Of being shot or even beat up
Peace is the only way for us.

Peace Poem
I think it should be more peace in the world.
For every woman, man, boy and girl.
For if there is plenty peace,
Life would be such a wonderful treat .
For we would smile and glow.
Like a bunch of playful Billy Goats.
No shooting or killings.
Just people sharing love and having tons of fun.
Peace
By Charlize James, age 10
Peace is all we need
Peace represents kindness ,caring ,loving generosity
Peace is important because it makes the world a better place.
And I wish some people would see that.
If peace changed the world, people all over the world would be happy.
No more bad things would come on the news,
It would be just like the good old days

Peace was Martin Luther King’s dream.
He wanted all black and white people to be treated the same.
We all wanted Hitler to have peace too.
Everybody wants to fulfill Martin Luther King’s dream and forget Hitler’s.
Everybody and anybody should have peace.
I think that this school has the most peace in the entire world because it’s a place full of education and education is an extraordinary thing.
The times have changed and black and white people can now go to school together and I think that’s amazing!
Martin Luther King is the reason why we all have peace!

Peace
Peace cannot be achieved by force, but rather be obtained by understanding and communicating with your enemy.
By Zakhai Ball, P4
Peace is peaceful
Peace is when you’re on the beach listening to the waves crash on the sand
Peace is when you’re on a bench in the park feeling the breeze of the wind
Peace is a good feeling
When you are peaceful you are happy in a nice feeling
Peace is in the world, peace is everywhere, when you are calm, its everywhere
Peace is not when you’re rambunctious, it happens when you sit there and just focus on doing nothing
Please
Encourage
And
Care
Everyone
Peace is when you get along with other people, you care for other people and that’s how you make peace!
