School celebrates Green Flag status

Eco efforts: The West Pembroke Primary family proudly receive their Eco Schools Green Flag

West Pembroke Primary is the first primary school in Bermuda to be awarded Green Flag status. At last week’s School Assembly, representatives from Greenrock and HSBC joined the students in their celebration.

Mrs Jacobs, the Eco Club Co-ordinator at West Pembroke Primary took to the stage explaining to the audience: “We started our Eco pathway in 2014 and we have reduced waste and reduced energy. We have set an example. This is the beginning of a journey, we must continue to sustain our ongoing projects and learn more and take it home …” she continued. “Other schools are being inspired, this is a symbol of our hard work. Students, parents this is not a one off project, it is a change. Congratulations to everyone.”

Ms Opal Wilson joined Mrs Jacobs on stage saying: “I agree, it doesn’t end here. We expect our electricity bill to go down further.”

Judy Doidge, HSBC Bank Bermuda Limited Corporate Secretary and senior manager overseeing the partnership with Green Rock told us, “HSBC is honoured to partner with Greenrock Bermuda in supporting the implementation of this globally recognised programme into our local schools. “Through this programme, the community, teachers and students work together in promoting environmental conservation, so that it becomes a way of life, and instils in our young people the importance of protecting our island, and our world, so that they can help to ensure our environment gets better attention now, and in the future.”

Ms Abbie Caldas, School Programmes Manager at Greenrock also spoke at the Assembly: “Congratulations and thank you to all involved. You have proven that with teamwork and commitment, we can make the necessary changes for a future quality of life. You are the leaders. This flag represents that achievement as you join young agents from all around the world. And this is a journey — now that you’ve earned this recognition, you have to sustain it. Continue your efforts as individuals, as a school, within our community. Any small thing you do can have a better impact on our community and our environment, both in Bermuda and globally. ”
