Braving a shave to support St Baldrick’s
Every year, St Baldrick’s hosts a “Brave the Shave” event in Bermuda raising thousands of dollars for childhood cancer research.
This year, Bermuda High School students and faculty are stepping up again to help in this worthwhile cause.
IB students Abbie Markey-Bradshaw and Chloe Smith, secondary science teacher Amanda Darrell, Y8 student Chiara Mackay and Y3 student Marly Heinicke will all be shaving their heads on March 18.
All of them have a fundraising page through the St Baldrick’s website, www.stbaldricks.org, under the “Donate” section.
• Marly Heinicke Y3
When I saw St Baldrick’s Foundation I really wanted to do my part. So I asked my mom if I could do it and she said, “Sure, you can do it”, so I signed up.
It really felt good. I really feel sad for all the children who have cancer and really want to help.
I set a goal to raise $1,000 and I am so proud of myself because I met my goal. It’s really important that people understand how special this is to me, I hope I help a lot of children.
• Chiara MacKay, Y8
My name is Chiara Mackay and I am 12 years old. On March 18, I will be shaving my head to raise funds for cancer research.
So many families have been affected by this horrible disease, and every three minutes a child has cancer diagnosed.
I am hoping that one day there will be enough research to find a cure.
I would like to dedicate this shave to the grandfather that I never had the opportunity to meet. He passed away from a brain tumour before I was born.
I will be donating my hair to the Locks of Love Foundation so that a wig can be made for a child in need.
Thank you for supporting me in my fundraising efforts.
