Bermuda’s young rugby players showcased their talents at the fifth annual Beyond Rugby Championship Day last Wednesday.

Talented boys and girls from the island’s middle and high schools took part in the event, which marked the final school tournament of the year.

In the high schools final, Bermuda Institute beat Warwick Academy 15-0. In the middle schools final, Sandys Secondary Middle School beat Dellwood Middle School 15-5.

In the high school girls’ game, CedarBridge Academy Pinks and Berkeley Blues drew the first game 5-5, while CedarBridge Pinks beat the Berkeley Blues 15-5 in the second game.

Michael Dunkley, the Premier, and Jeff Baron, the Junior Minister of National Security, were among the crowd cheering the young players on.

Patrick Calow, the Bermuda Rugby and Football Union’s youth development officer, said: “This Beyond Rugby tournament caps off a really great schools rugby season for us.

“With both our Digicel Middle School and Ariel Re High School leagues going from strength to strength, as well as the inclusion of the U18 Girls’ Sevens growth, it was wonderful to end it on a good note. The focus now shifts towards the upcoming Ariel Re Sevens tournament, in which both college and high school teams are coming on the island. We’re entering two teams in the high school division as well as a team within the college division.”

The Ariel Re Bermuda 7s takes place tomorrow and Saturday at the National Sports Centre. The event brings the best in high school and college rugby to the island. The inaugural event will feature pool play tomorrow with championship matches on Saturday.
