Helping students avoid accidents in the home
When our school, Warwick Academy, assigned us a project with the objective of helping the community, we experienced a lot of frustration while trying to come up with an idea.
We were then approached by the Bermuda Red Cross to help them to make a video informing young people about everyday dangers in their homes.
We had no problem making the decision to say yes. Presenting to schools island-wide, sending a serious message, expressing ourselves and having fun were things we knew we would enjoy.
The Red Cross wanted to work with two young men to make the presentation because they felt the audience would relate better, be more engaged, and gain a better understanding of the message we were trying to get across.
We agreed with this 100 per cent and that is why my fellow Warwick Academy student, Dylan Pedro, and I were so ecstatic to be able to work on this project and, hopefully, make a difference.
The video covers most rooms found in an average house, such as the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and the outside area.
In each of these rooms we laid out different hazards that young people between the ages of 10 to 16 don’t even think twice about.
We were aware that the number of accidents involving young people was on the rise, so we decided to add in a surprise ending that featured a young person in a bike accident. It shows what a bystander should do in that situation.
It not only shows what you should do but also what you should not do, which is very important.
Our objective now is to visit most, if not all, of the high schools on the island to spread the word about being prepared and preventing any accidents from happening in and around the home.
The message of awareness leads to preparedness, which helps to reduce the risk for you, your friends, family and your entire community.
We support the Bermuda Red Cross and the Disaster Risk Reduction programme of preparedness and awareness.
