Praise for new head boy and head girl
Warwick Academy principal Maggie McCorkell announced the new head boy and girl, Brian Wedlich and Hannah Marshall, during an assembly on April 22 in the Phoebe Purvis Memorial Hall at Warwick Academy.
They have taken on the responsibility to succeed last year’s head boy and girl, David Darrell and Claire Conyers.
Brian wants to continue his education to pursue a career in physics and design, while Hannah would like to go to medical school and become a doctor.
Both Hannah and Brian have attended Warwick Academy since year one and in their free time they read, do homework, spend time with friends and family, and take part in secondary drama productions.
Hannah has “totally immersed herself in not only excellent academics with principal’s list honours, but also sports, nine school drama productions and an extensive community service record”, according to the brief biography read out by Mrs McCorkell. Hannah is involved with seven clubs, including the varsity swim team, the varsity track and field team, the Warwick Academy badminton and volleyball teams, the Sharks Swim Club and a Rotary Interact club.
She has also represented Bermuda when she attended the Global Young Leader Conference in 2015 and 2016, and when she was one of the 12 selected to speak at the United Nations UNIS conference.
In school she has been an Eco-Club president, a debate team captain and a student council member.
Hannah also runs her own business as a swim coach and through that she has worked with Aquamania.
Mrs McCorkell said: “Hannah is poised, confident and dedicated to her new role as head girl.”
Brian has an “impressive academic record of first honours and principal’s list”.
“He has had extensive involvement in drama programmes at the school and in the community,” Mrs McCorkell added. “He has served on the student council and he was a prefect student in year 11.”
Brian is also accomplished at public speaking, evidenced by his speaking at the United Nations along with Hannah.
He has travelled to Haiti with the Bermuda Overseas Missions to help to build an orphanage with the Feed My Lambs group, and has attended Global Young Leaders events in Eastern Europe.
He has also been a junior volunteer at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo to help to organise a youth conference in 2014.
Mrs McCorkell said he “brings a responsible, mature and broad-minded attitude and he looks forward to working with all of us in his new role”.
Both Brian and Hannah believe the roles of head boy and head girl should be representing the school, acting as a good role model for younger students, setting a good example and watching other students succeed.
