Classroom’s just beachy
Have you ever been walking on a beach and stepped on a piece of trash?
Have you thought, “Why don’t people just take the time to put their trash in the trash can?!” I have! That’s why, when my mum told me about a Plastic Tides event, I immediately signed up.
Plastic Tides is a group of conservationists that fights against pollution.
They do their research on paddle boards.
This homeschool event helps raise awareness about littering, specifically on beaches and in the water.
We met at SurfSup so we could rent paddle boards. Ms Anne, from KBB (Keep Bermuda Beautiful), was there to explain how to clean up properly, teach us which items eventually dissolve and which don’t, and how we can make a difference.
About twenty children participated and we split into three groups.
While one group paddle boarded with Plastic Tides, the other two groups cleaned up the beaches. Some people found really cool things. One person found a parrotfish’s jawbone. Someone else found an onion floating in the water. I found lots of glass, rope and bottlecaps.
My favourite part of the day was when one of the Plastic Tides’ men let me sit on a seat that was attached to his paddle board. This was my favourite field trip for school this year because I love being outside. I had fun cleaning up the trash. It made me feel good when I saw the clean beach. This summer, I will continue to Keep Bermuda Beautiful!
