Students set up Amnesty Club
Arising from their study of Human Rights as part of the Citizenship curriculum at Saltus, S10 students Sy McPeek and Hanna Percy decided to organise an Amnesty Club.
Sy writes about the purpose of the club: “Hanna and I decided to start an Amnesty Club at Saltus with the aim to educate students about current issues and allow them to make a difference in the world. Many young people, especially in Bermuda, don’t think that they have the power to be effective on a worldwide scale but Amnesty Club gives them a chance to change that.
“They can campaign for things that they believe in and injustices that they wish to fight against locally or internationally.
“Our hope is that it gives children the chance to change something within their society that can have a wide-scale impact.
“Hanna and I are hoping to start getting people entered in the club by the start of the next school year. The club is currently based at Saltus but, depending on the support we get, we hope to expand locally to accommodate any other young people from around Bermuda who wish to get educated about civil rights and who would like to help us run campaigns.
“On that note, we will have a website up next year where people can sign up for the club if they wish to join.”
