Studying Sea Venture history with games
Last month, our history class studied the Sea Venture and our teacher, Mr Cornish, showed us a video called Downing’s Wreck — The Story of the Sea Venture by Look Bermuda/Look Films.
Our class was interested in the topic and we came up with the idea to make board games to help teach other students about this important aspect of Bermuda’s history. We looked to other well-known board games for inspiration and began our designs in teams of four or five.
Most of the games that we created use the concept of connecting clues and solving mysteries about the Sea Venture. For example: how did they use clay pots to determine the year the ship sailed? Did royal markings offer any clues? We were given a month to complete the assignment, and then we invited teachers to an open-house, along with the J.P. Rouja, who has family ties to the Sea Venture and produced the aforementioned film.
We explained the rules of our games to our invited guests and invited them to play. We had a great time showing off what we had learnt about the Sea Venture
Mrs Parker, head of school and Ms Hollingsworth, deputy head of school, along with other staff members, joined us and it was a fun morning.
All of our guests said they learnt something new about the Sea Venture, and we would like to thank Mr Cornish for allowing us to bring history to life in this way.
