Bermuda High School Year In Review

Enterprise Day is an opportunity for Year 9 students to tap into their entrepreneurial spirit and create a small business from idea to reality. On the day, the Jessie Vesey Sports Centre was turned into a market with stalls selling fresh donuts, homemade candy, ice-cream, cookies, cupcakes, popcorn, crepes and pressed sandwiches to name a few! Overcoming obstacles like how to keep food warm, and figuring out how much product to purchase, making fresh dough on the day and printing signs and labels were all part of the learning process. Here Abigail Belfrage, Taja Williams, Camryn Heinicke, Alexandra Clare and Haajira Amjath show tehir project

For the summer holidays, Young Observer will be featuring highlights of the school year in our senior schools. This week, we salute Bermuda High School

In April, BHS formally unveiled the designs for the new Innovation Centre. Local architects Linberg & Simmons, in collaboration with education architects from Gensler in the United States, revealed the new designs which will include five new Science laboratories, two Computer Science and Robotics labs, a MakerSpace, a Learning Commons and Library, and a Leadership Centre for Girls.  A renovated Arts Wing will house the upgraded Music and Visual Art departments with a Blackbox Theatre and an outdoor “Idea Hub” will link the Visual Arts with the MakerSpace. Construction of the new 14,000 square-foot facility is expected to begin in the Fall, and will open to students in September, 2020 (Photograph submitted)
In April, the BHS ecoClub was awarded the Green Seed award by Greenrock’s School Programme Manager, Davida Morris for successfully completing the first ‘pathway’ or ‘theme’, and will work towards achieving the Green Flag status this year
In December, BHS hosted 21 female students from Dellwood, Northlands and West Pembroke Primary schools for the very first BHS Hour of Code event in conjunction with the global Hour of Code taking place as part of Computer Science Education Week. Secondary students worked as mentors for the younger girls and guided them through coding programmes Python, Scratch and HTML. The girls had a great day, and BHS looks forward to hosting similar events in the future
As the only all-girl's school on the island, BHS were excited to take part and support the theme of the 2018 International Women’s Day HYPERLINK "https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/pressforprogress?source=feed_text"#pressforprogress. Through a week of activities, students reflected on how to press for progress in their own lives, alumna Clare O’Connor spoke to Secondary students about the many women entrepreneurs she has interviewed for Forbes, and what she has learned from them.  Elena Menendez Sanchez Y9 gave an impassioned speech about what being a feminist means to her, and Primary and Secondary students attended the celebrations at City Hall
Throughout the year, our talented musicians perform across the island at different events and locations; the Christmas Walkabout, Westmeath, Peace Lutheran church and various school concerts. In their final concert of the year on June 11, staff, students and families were treated to a night of music spanning genres from Traditional Irish music to Bruno Mars with performances by the orchestra, Nothing But Treble, Year 7 and 8 Ukuleles, choir and a couple of soloists
On Friday, November 24th, students from Y5 – IB2 at The Bermuda High School took part in Round Square Day which involved a multitude of service projects throughout the day. These included clean-ups at Masterworks Museum, Windreach and the Meals on Wheels headquarters, the removal of invasive plant species on Trunk Island, reading and visiting with residents at Lefroy House, painting a mural, removing boat signage at RBYC, and reading, art and games with younger students at West Pembroke Primary, Hope Academy, Port Royal Primary and Francis Patton. In the afternoon students worked in teams to build bikes to give to children in need. Student leaders organised every aspect of the day, and it was a wonderful way to honour our membership in the Round Square Organisation and celebrate the IDEALS of Environmentalism, Leadership and Service.
In the first event of its kind at BHS, Student Leaders worked with the Head of Round Square and the Director of Admissions & Inclusion to organise a Diversity Day, which consisted of a series of small and large group activities aimed at understanding and celebrating diversity at BHS. Guest speaker, Dany Pen presented on Multi-Culturalism and Diversity and shared her fascinating life story, and then students organised into groups to join in student leader-facilitated activities. These activities revolved around exploring and celebrating the multiple facets of our individual and cultural identities and provoked some interesting discussions.
