I recently competed in the #DeputyGovernorForTheDay Competition that was put on by Government House in honour of International Women’s Day.

I was thrilled to be chosen as one of two winners, along with Year 12 Maya Yates, who would be given the opportunity to shadow Deputy Governor Alison Crocket on International Women’s Day on Friday, March 8.

The night before, I could hardly sleep. A solid mix of nerves and excitement, I couldn’t wait for all that the day had to offer.

My day started at 9am. Once I arrived at Government House, we had a welcome breakfast with Deputy Governor Crocket, Government House Executive Officer Sara Smalley, Government House Policy Officer Pearl Melius, Kendaree Burgess from the Chamber of Commerce and The Royal Gazette journalist Fiona McWhirter.

We were able to chat, share a bit about ourselves and share our thoughts on the role of women in the community and the world.

We were made to feel comfortable from the very beginning. Throughout the day, we engaged in various meetings with Deputy Governor Crocket

Meetings were held with Governor John Rankin, Government House staff, Executive Officer Smalley and Policy Officer Melius.

We also met with Superintendent Astwood from the Bermuda Police Service and Dr Desilva from Family Centre. Each of these meetings were led by women, leaders in their respective fields — talk about awesome! How could I not feel empowered!

We attended the International Women’s Day activities at City Hall and had the opportunity to share the stage with Deputy Governor Crocket as she delivered her speech.

The speeches were delivered by and about successful women in our community and gave me such a great feeling. Not one of the women said that their journey or the journeys of other women were easy. Listening to their stories was an indication that their hard work was worth it.

I wish I could say which part of the day was the highlight for me. The truth is that I enjoyed the day in its entirety.

The day ended with me feeling so empowered, thanks to Deputy Governor Crocket and her super team and all of the women who shared their stories. I was reminded that I can be anything I want to be and that #balanceforbetter is attainable.
